Co-creating a framework for communication during the workshop.
This suggested time for this exercise is on the second meeting.
Materials needed
✓ A white board and markers
✓ Pens and A4 paper
Proposed location
✓ A quiet room with a board
Steps
1.
Create two columns on the white board by drawing a line in the middle. At the top of column 1, write “I want to bring and enjoy…” and at column 2, “I want to avoid and leave out…”
2.
Participants are asked to copy what they see on the board and then take 5 minutes to think and fill out both columns.
In column 1 they write:
all the behaviour and things that they would like to find and bring to the group. That means things that would make them feel good in the group.
and
In column 2, they write:
All the things they would like to avoid and leave out of the group. That means things that would make them feel uncomfortable”
(5 minutes)
3.
One by one, participants share what they have written with the group.
The words and short phrases are collected and gathered on the white board by the facilitator (10-15 minutes).
4.
Participants are asked to choose three words from each column on the board (six words in total) and write a text in that includes all six. (15 minutes).
5.
The participants read their texts and these become an opportunity for discussion – on the feelings evoked by the text and on the ideas it inspires (20-30 minutes).
6.
During the reading of the texts and the discussion, it is likely that other keywords will come up that should be added to the white board by the moderator (10 minutes).
7.
After all the texts have been read and all the words have been added to the board, the facilitator asks the participants if the table can become the “contract” of the group. Participants add and remove words until there is a common agreement.
Closing up
- Recap all the words on the board and make sure that everyone agrees.
